Food security is a key existential issue for any country. The value to Scotland’s economy of farmed seafood is the highest it has ever been, eclipsing the value of seafood caught through the efforts of the entire UK fishing fleet. Farmed Scottish salmon is the UK's biggest food export, shellfish is one of our lowest-carbon protein sources, and farmed seaweed is finding new and exciting uses. The sector supports rewarding jobs in both coastal and island communities, as well as hundreds of businesses throughout the supply chain.

We channel our resources into the areas that will benefit the Scottish aquaculture sector the most, including reducing its environmental footprint and increasing its economic impact. The research we fund is geared towards meeting genuine needs and solving industry challenges.
