From nets to networks: exploring ‘aquatech’ at the National Robotarium

A workshop delivered in partnership with Scottish Seafood and the National Robotarium

On 9 October 2025, SAIC co-hosted a workshop at the National Robotarium, Heriot-Watt University, in partnership with Seafood Scotland and the National Robotarium. Titled ‘From nets to networks: AI, automation and robotics in fisheries and aquaculture’, the event brought together almost 40 delegates from industry, academia, governance and policy making to explore how emerging and enabling technologies can support the aquaculture and wild catch sectors.

Driving innovation in aquaculture and fisheries

The workshop focused on the transformative potential of AI, robotics, and automation - technologies that are already being deployed to improve efficiency, enhance sustainability, and help address workforce challenges.

The day begain with an exploration of current challenges and priorities, from Iain Berrill of Salmon Scotland and Jeni Adamson of Seafood Scotland, before the delegates listened to a series of lightning talks from technology providers and Heriot-Watt researchers working at the cutting edge of ‘aquatech’. Afternoon breakout sessions encouraged collaborative discussion around these questions:

1. What's working?

Aquaculture’s openness to innovation is enabling real progress in fish welfare, safety, and operational efficiency. Technologies like sensing and predictive modelling are widely adopted, though turning data into actionable insights remains a challenge.

2. What’s holding us back?

Delegates agreed that stronger cross-sector collaboration is essential. More opportunities for knowledge exchange - like this workshop - are needed to overcome barriers and accelerate progress.

3. Where could AI and robotics be applied next?

Ideas here included everything from predictive environmental modelling, infrastructure inspection, to enhanced animal welfare monitoring. Operational improvements across the supply chain were also highlighted.

4. How do we move from research to implementation?

The group felt that the sector needs targeted funding, streamlined regulation, and innovation-friendly policies. A clearer understanding of market needs and strategic prioritisation will be key to unlocking the full potential of these technologies.

SAIC’s commitment to collaboration and innovation

The workshop underscored the value of bringing together diverse voices to share insights, spark ideas, and build connections. It’s clear that collaboration will be central to driving innovation and ensuring that technology solutions for the sector are scalable, sustainable, and impactful.

We look forward to continuing our work with partners across the aquaculture and seafood sector to support the development and adoption of transformative technologies.
