Abdelfateh Kerrouche

Dr Abdelfateh Kerrouche is an Associate Professor in Electronic Engineering at Edinburgh Napier University, where he leads research at the intersection of intelligent sensing, robotics, artificial intelligence and environmental monitoring. After studying electronics engineering in France and completing his PhD in Measurement and Instrumentation in the UK, his career has been driven by a passion for developing technologies that address real-world challenges.

Over the past decade, his research has evolved from embedded sensing systems and lab-on-chip technologies to autonomous robotic platforms capable of monitoring complex environments in real time. Working closely with industry, government agencies, and environmental organisations, he has developed innovative sensing technologies to improve water quality monitoring, pathogen detection and environmental resilience.

Dr Kerrouche is the founder of DeepSeaLab, an innovation programme developing autonomous underwater robots that combine smart sensing, automated water sampling and real-time environmental analysis. His vision is to transform water monitoring from occasional sampling into continuous environmental intelligence, helping aquaculture operators detect problems earlier, protect fish health, and support more sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems. His work has attracted national and international recognition through research funding, innovation awards and commercialisation programmes.

As a member of the SAIC Science Panel, he is committed to strengthening collaboration between academia, industry and policymakers to accelerate innovation and reinforce Scotland's position as a global leader in sustainable aquaculture.
