Sofie Spatharis, PhD is a Senior Lecturer in Aquatic Ecology at the University of Glasgow whose research combines fundamental ecological science with practical solutions for sustainable aquaculture and coastal ecosystem management. Her work focuses on understanding the mechanisms that maintain biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems, using phytoplankton communities as a model system to investigate species coexistence, ecosystem functioning, and environmental change.
A major focus of Dr Spatharis' research is the development of innovative approaches to support sustainable seaweed aquaculture. She has particular expertise in marine microbial ecology, biofouling, and the interactions between planktonic organisms and cultivated seaweeds.
