SAIC Introduces: FishLead Hub
FishLead Blue Innovation Hub Ltd/Gte is a non-profit social enterprise focused on addressing skills, leadership, and knowledge gaps among young people within the African aquaculture and fisheries sectors.
Operating out of Akure, Nigeria, the youth-led organization works across the aquaculture value chain to build technical capacity, empowering the next generation to drive and accelerate sustainable regional blue economy innovations.
A primary objective of FishLead Hub is developing a highly skilled youth workforce capable of adopting modern, environmentally responsible aquaculture methodologies and secure the future of Africa and global food systems. The African aquaculture sector faces significant structural bottlenecks, especially limited technical expertise among the youth. FishLead Hub mitigates these challenges through tailored training initiatives, such as its Aquaculture Skills for Impact Programme (ASIP). This curriculum delivers hands-on instruction in hatchery management, fish health, rearing systems, feed and nutrition, post-harvest and value addition, business and entrepreneurship to undergraduates, graduates and young professionals.

In addition to technical training, the hub operates early-career intervention initiatives such as the Catching Aquaculture Professionals Young Outreach Programme designed to spark interest in fisheries, aquaculture, and blue economy careers among secondary school students before they make career choices, Campus Chapters Initiative which serve as a local base for students of fisheries, aquaculture, and related disciplines to connect, learn, and lead, Monthly Webinars, Workshops, and Masterclasses programs which connects our community members with academic and industry mentors across the globe.
By collaborating with commercial farms, tertiary institutions, research and professional bodies, the hub also facilitates farm visits, knowledge exchange, and supports student participation in national scientific symposia, bridging the gap between classroom activities, academic research and commercial farm application. To drive institutional sustainability, the hub runs a commercial enterprise offering aquaculture services, including technical consultancy, farm setup, inputs supply, farm production, value addition and managed investments. This facility provides youth with real-world business experience, and 100% of the net profit directly funds the hub's non-profit programs.
As a member of the Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Cluster (SAIC) consortium, FishLead Hub aims to build collaborative linkages between international institutions and practical African aquaculture applications. We seek partnerships with professionals, industry, technology providers, and academic institutions to run joint research projects, trial emerging technologies in tropical aquatic systems, exchange best practices and secure collaborative international grant funding for regional aquaculture expansion and workforce development.
