The second tranche of EMFF funding

EMFF 2

Providing valuable funding for capital investment

The second SAIC-led EMFF project further develops the first project, broadening the range of new technologies. In terms of disease prevention, circular Environets were developed at Mowi Scotland and eliminate the need to mechanically clean nets. Mowi is using these specialised nets at sites that experience complex gill disease, under the premise that net washing debris is eliminated. Further non-medicinal interventions were supported, including Thermolicer, Hydrolicer and freshwater treatments.

This project also sought to increase capacity in Scotland, which is SAIC’s Priority Innovation Area 2 (Unlocking additional capacity). Therefore, an innovative site was supported off the island of Westray, Orkney. This site is characterised by large waves, which present operational challenges in terms of safety and fish husbandry. This project is managed by Cooke Aquaculture, who is seeking to sustainably grow into new farming areas.

The SAIC EMFF programme also aims to encourage cross-sector collaboration and knowledge-sharing. For instance, industry production health professionals have been invited to workshops to share their experiences with each other and with policy-makers. Many of these technologies are very new, and therefore the EMFF programme has supported the sector with their deployment. Development continues at a rapid pace, with each improvement driven by the ambition to continuously improve the welfare of the farmed salmon or trout.
